While Methacton's Carlton Lavong was setting records and stealing headlines in the indoor track and field season, Haverford School's Tom Hopkins was performing well in some of the same events without a lot of first-place finishes to show for it. Hopkins won the 100 and 200 meters and clipped Lavong to win the long jump as well. Yesterday, though, was Hopkins' turn to shine at the first big outdoor meet of the season, the 26th annual Pennsylvania Track Classic at Great Valley. North Penn's 2008 team had held that record (11:00.63). North Penn also did well in the boys' competition, as the distance medley team of Chris Trimble, Zach Heimer, Matt White, and Brad Miles broke the meet record with a time of 10:42.24. He finished first in the long jump in a Jan. Lavong captured first place in the triple jump by posting a 47-91/2. 23. McKendrick nipped Johnson at the tape in 25.501 to Johnson's 25.509. His javelin toss of 192-6 beat second-place finisher Tom Lang of St. Holy Ghost Prep's Jim Budzinski was an individual double winner, taking the javelin and discus. His long jump of 23 feet, 11/4 inches beat Lavong's 22-61/4 to win that event. The three wins in one day gave Hopkins one more win than he had during the entire indoor season. Pius X by more than three feet. The Knights also took the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 relays and had an individual winner in Nicholas Swan in the high jump (6-2). 16 meet and first in the 400 meters Feb. Cardinal O'Hara's Anna McCloskey took the shot put and discus. The team of Jon Font, Benedict Wong, Adrian Li, and Tyler Mueller covered the distance in 11:00.87. She was part of a two-person team to win the triple jump (with Kayla Charles), high jump (with Bridget Coffey), and long jump (with Charles). The lone highlight for the host Blues was the performance of their distance medley relay, which took first place. Oxenreider Relays. In the girls' competition, also at Great Valley, Notre Dame's Maura McKendrick and Chester's Rayiana Johnson provided the race of the day in the open 200. The event was dominated by North Penn athletes, who teamed to take first place in nine of the 13 events. At Muhlenberg High, North Penn registered 110 points to take top team honors. Tocci led off the 4x800 and Wusinich led off the distance medley.
